Liverpool and Real Madrid to Battle for Bayern Munich Midfielder Xabi Alonso
Liverpool and Real Madrid are set to fight for a reunion with Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to Spanish news outlet Vozpopuli - via theExpress
The veteran midfielder's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and will look for pastures new unless a new deal is negotiated.
It is reported that Alonso, 34, wants his next contract to be a three-year deal, but the Bundesliga champions are unwilling to meet that request.
This has led the two of his former employers to look into the possibility of signing him.
Alonso started his career at Real Sociedad before moving to Liverpool in 2004. After five successful years at Anfield, during which time he won the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup, the Spaniard moved to Madrid to add a La Liga title and another Champions Leagu to his trophy case before leaving for Bayern.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is known to be in the market for a midfielder and - though he may be ageing - Alonso could be a good addition to Anfield dressing room.
Similar to Didier Drogba rejoining Chelsea, the influence of having a former Champions League winner among a team who have little experience in winning trophies could be beneficial.
Though Alonso may not be ready to play a bit part role, in signing for Liverpool he could have a positive effect on the future of the Reds.
